Doctors usually recommend that kids who get mono avoid sports for at least a month after symptoms are gone because the spleen is usually enlarged temporarily from the illness. The most commonly occurring signs of mono include:
- Body aches or headaches
- Swollen tonsils
- Swelling of lymph nodes in all parts of the body, particularly those in the neck
- Sore throat. Often, white patches will form on tonsils. This may make the disease appear to be strep throat.
- Fever – this may range from 101 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit
- Chills – feeling cold even when room temperature is normal
- Lack of energy and fatigue, sometimes up to a month or more
- Loss of appetite
